IRS Surfacing Technologies is very much a family owned and managed organisation that was founded in 1989 by John Berry and his wife Elaine. John still remains as Managing Director with Elaine as Company Secretary. They are supported by their Son Robert who has worked through the ranks with I.R.S. from apprentice engineer to his current appointment as Works Director.
Initially operating out of 200 square ft of space and armed with no more than a lathe and a new arc spray system, John Berry set about the task of metal spraying and machining O.E.M. vacuum pump shafts and compressor rotors for local companies, alone and often working an eighteen hour day, seven day week with the unshakeable belief of providing high technology, quality and service at realistic prices.
Growth was rapid, the objective was to put to together a high technological facility specifically embracing the modern concept of cost efficiency. This objective meant bringing together a specialist group of like-minded individuals, driven by a common will to succeed. It meant heavy investment in the very latest fringe technology and required the building and moulding of a dedicated team of engineering and technical professionals.
